THE HAIR BRAINED ENGINEERING
5" LIFT
Well, people asked. So I
said I would write this up. "No one told me what to do or how to
do it so I just did it!" I wanted a lift, but didn't want to buy
a kit. I was working at a NAPA store at the time. So I went
through the parts books.
The front first.
NAPA pn 277-5371 springs they were used on Hi-Boy rangers. They
give 2.25" lift over the stock Bronco II coils. A stock Bronco
II coil at static height is 10.5 inches these coils at static
height are 12 inches.
there is also a ratio of movement between the spindle and the
spring perch and that ratio is 1.5 . For every inch you move the
spring perch you move the spindle 1.5 inches.
This was the first step but I wanted more. Daystar KF-09101 for
a D-28. Or KF-09108 for a M-35. Is a 2" spacer 2 x 1.5 equals
3".
Now my caster and camber was way off so DUFF radius arms pn 5345
went into this mix, this helps with the caster and the flex.
Then to the camber bushings to make it livable NAPA part #
269-2059 bushings fix this for a D-28. For a M-35 the bushing pn
is 264-3010. The camber is not perfect but livable. The steering
was a little sketchy with bump steer so a DUFF drop pitman arm
pn. 5493 took care of that. At this point the brake hoses were
stretching so DUFF pn 3932 went on.
Now to the back
At first I tried add-a-leafs and 1" blocks not much flex. But I
did get over 2" in the rear. So when I decided I wanted more I
went to DUFF and picked up a pair of rear leaf springs. Pn 5560.
This was only 3" so off I went again. belltech pn 6100 lowering
blocks and U-bolts 2".
2+3=5" BDS shocks for a 6" lift. No one shows a 5" lift. And
DUFF traction bars pn 5302.
Now to keep the 35" tires from rubbing I extended the rear bump
stops 3.5 inches and extended the front bump stops 1 inch.
I did this one step at a time and have had great results. that
is how I did it. That’s how I go where "You can't go there " is.
